A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of January 2016 as "Stalking Awareness
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, January 2016 will be observed nationally as the
fifth annual "Stalking Awareness Month"; and
WHEREAS, According to the National Center for Victims of
Crime, more than six million people, one in six women and one in
19 men, are victims of stalkers annually; and
WHEREAS, Most frequently, stalkers are former intimate
partners and abusers of the person being stalked and 76% of
persons who have been murdered by their stalker have at one time
been an intimate partner of that stalker; and
WHEREAS, Stalking victims experience lost time from work,
anxiety, insomnia, social dysfunction and severe depression in
significantly higher numbers than the general public; and

WHEREAS, Stalking pervasively occurs in neighborhoods, on
college campuses and in workplace environments, and is a crime
under the laws of all 50 states, the District of Columbia,
United States territories and under Federal statute; and
WHEREAS, Notwithstanding these facts, awareness of the
pervasiveness and detrimental social impact of stalking is
minimal; and
WHEREAS, To raise social awareness, the month of January 2016
has been set aside nationwide as "Stalking Awareness Month";
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
month of January 2016 as "Stalking Awareness Month" in
Pennsylvania.
