A RESOLUTION
Urging the Congress of the United States to ban the practice of
"paid patriotism" as described in Senator John McCain's and
Senator Jeff Flake's Tackling Paid Patriotism, a joint
oversight report.
WHEREAS, The United States Department of Defense paid at
least $6.8 million in taxpayer-funded sports marketing contracts
for salutes, color guards and anthems as identified in the
Tackling Paid Patriotism, a joint oversight report; and
WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Pirates received $18,000 in taxpayer
funds for a United States Air Force performance of the national
anthem and 250 game tickets for Delayed Entry Program members
and their families and friends; and
WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Steelers received $27,000 in taxpayer
funds for an on-field swearing-in ceremony for Delayed Entry
Program participants; and
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Phillies received a total of
$48,085 from the United States Navy to provide game tickets and
concession credits; and

WHEREAS, The taxpayer funds paid to professional sports
teams, deemed "paid patriotism," could better be spent directly
helping our country's veterans; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the Congress
of the United States to ban the practice of "paid patriotism" as
described in Senator John McCain's and Senator Jeff Flake's
Tackling Paid Patriotism, a joint oversight report.
