A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life, memory and service of Wyncote resident and
Concerned Black Men cofounder Harvey L. Crudup and expressing
condolences on his passing.
WHEREAS, Harvey L. Crudup, 80, of Wyncote, passed away
September 9, 2015; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Crudup began a 31-year career with the
Philadelphia Police Department and a lifetime of service when he
joined the department as a patrolman in 1958; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Crudup served as captain of the 39th Police
District in 1983, where he often spoke out on crime trends and
encouraged interaction between police officers and the
community; and
WHEREAS, In 1984, Mr. Crudup was appointed as a deputy police
commissioner, making him one of the few African Americans to
attain a leadership position within the Philadelphia Police

Department; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Crudup was committed to caring for youth,
especially at-risk youth; and
WHEREAS, In 1975, he and four other officers cofounded
Concerned Black Men, a youth mentoring organization that grew
into an international group whose members include former United
States Attorney General Eric Holder; and
WHEREAS, In 1988, then-Mayor W. Wilson Goode appointed Mr.
Crudup as executive director of the Youth Study Center,
Philadelphia's maximum-security detention center for youth
offenders; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Crudup was known for his dedication to serving
the community, which included his role as president of the
Cheltenham Branch of the NAACP; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Crudup is survived by his wife, Nona Crudup, his
son, Harvey Crudup, Jr., a grandson and many nieces and nephews;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life,
memory and service of Wyncote resident and Concerned Black Men
cofounder Harvey L. Crudup; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend
condolences to his family, friends and colleagues; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the family of Harvey L. Crudup.
