A RESOLUTION
Designating September 18, 2015, as "Falls and Flu Prevention and
Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives notes the importance of
improving the health, functional abilities and quality of life
of older adults in our communities; and
WHEREAS, Annual flu vaccination is the single best way to
prevent seasonal flu infections and serious flu-related
illnesses; and
WHEREAS, Because early vaccination is associated with greater
health benefits, getting vaccinated as soon as a vaccine becomes
available is recommended as an effective flu prevention
strategy; and
WHEREAS, Older adults, especially persons with weakened
immune function or chronic health conditions, are susceptible to
flu complications resulting in hospitalization or death; and

WHEREAS, Vaccine options for older adults include a standard-
dose vaccine and a more protective higher-dose vaccine; and
WHEREAS, Improving vaccination rates is an important public
health goal in the Philadelphia area, where rates have fallen
below the national average; and
WHEREAS, Preventing falls is another public health challenge
in our communities; and
WHEREAS, Falls are a leading cause of fatal and nonfatal
injuries among older adults; and
WHEREAS, The risk of falling increases with each decade of
life; and
WHEREAS, Maintaining vision, balance and mobility, reviewing
medication use and ensuring home safety are some goals of fall
prevention; and
WHEREAS, Enlisting the support of family members and
caregivers helps when addressing modifiable fall risk factors;
and
WHEREAS, Center in the Park in Germantown is a nonprofit
community center serving senior residents of northwest
Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Center in the Park is participating in the National
Council on Aging's Flu + You program; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
September 18, 2015, as "Falls and Flu Prevention and Awareness
Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to
Center in the Park, 5818 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA
19144.
