A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 75th anniversary of the Pennsylvania Turnpike
and the Turnpike's impact on this Commonwealth and on
America's Interstate Highway System.
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Turnpike will celebrate 75 years of
service in October 2015; and
WHEREAS, The original 160-mile section of the Pennsylvania
Turnpike opened just after midnight on October 1, 1940,
welcoming motorists to travel between Carlisle and Irwin; and
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Turnpike set the national standard
for modern, limited-access highways and served as the model upon
which America's Interstate Highway System was built; and
WHEREAS, The original 160-mile toll road that carried 2.7
million vehicles in its first full year of operation now spans
552 miles, carrying more than 194 million vehicles a year; and
WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Turnpike is in the process of
