A RESOLUTION
Congratulating Chapman Borough, Northampton County, on the
occasion of its 150th anniversary.
WHEREAS, Chapman Borough, Northampton County, was
incorporated on October 25, 1865; and
WHEREAS, Chapman Borough is named after William Chapman, an
immigrant born in 1816 on the plains of Waterloo, Mt. Tonenshau,
France, to English parents from Cornwall County, England; and
WHEREAS, William Chapman was raised in Cornwall and worked in
slate quarries there; and
WHEREAS, In 1842, Chapman arrived in Pennsylvania and
purchased land in Northampton County that he developed into
slate quarries during the 1850s; and
WHEREAS, He formed the Chapman Slate Company and as the
company expanded, the surrounding land became a classic company
town in which the quarry employees lived in company-owned homes

and bought goods at a company-owned store; and
WHEREAS, At the height of its growth during the beginning of
the 20th century, Chapman Borough had a population of 700
inhabitants; and
WHEREAS, The slate from the Chapman Quarries was of a
superior quality and was used as roof material on many public
buildings, depots, churches and private residences across the
country, including the State Capitols of New York and
Connecticut and the Grand Central Depot and the Metropolitan
Museum of Art in New York City; and
WHEREAS, The Chapman Slate Quarries closed in 1959, but many
of the homes formerly occupied by employees of the quarries
exist and are currently owned by descendants of those employees;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate
Chapman Borough, Northampton County, on the occasion of its
150th anniversary.
