A RESOLUTION
Congratulating Chalfant Borough upon the momentous occasion of
its centennial anniversary.
WHEREAS, Chalfant Borough traces its origin to the early 19th
century when Henry Chalfant, a pioneer, arrived in the eastern
hills of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, Henry Chalfant rose to great prominence amassing an
estate of 102 acres while providing for the community as the
innkeeper, general store proprietor and as the first postmaster
for the Turtle Creek Valley area; and
WHEREAS, The one-sixth square mile community came to find its
spirit from Henry Chalfant and named the borough after him; and
WHEREAS, In the winter of 1914, 52 electors signed into
effect their desire to depart from Wilkins Township, citing
concerns with services and long-range planning; and
WHEREAS, On December 14, 1914, Chalfant Borough was

officially incorporated; and
WHEREAS, This small community has continued to grow through
the decades from a population of approximately 500 and 105
dwellings to a population of 800 with over 400 households; and
WHEREAS, Chalfant Borough has stayed strong and weathered
years of struggle through the Great Depression, changing
economies during the industrial boom through the growth of
Westinghouse Electric Company and various steel mills and
persevered during the subsequent industrial collapse in the late
20th century; and
WHEREAS, Chalfant Borough has overcome hardships, while
remaining true to the values created by its founders, and
history and legacy still live in the hearts and minds of older
residents; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its proud history, Chalfant Borough has
been blessed with dedicated civic leaders who have helped it
grow and flourish, as well as diligent and productive residents
who have helped it become an inspiring presence in this
Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate
Chalfant Borough upon the momentous occasion of its centennial
anniversary.
