A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of August 1 through August 7, 2015, as
"World Breastfeeding Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "World Breastfeeding Week" was established and is
annually recognized by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding
Action; and
WHEREAS, "World Breastfeeding Week" calls for concerted
global action to support and urge women to combine breastfeeding
and work; and
WHEREAS, This year's theme is "Breastfeeding & Work: Let's
Make It Work!"; and
WHEREAS, Whether a woman is working inside or outside of the
home, it is important that every mother be empowered to exercise
her right and her baby's right to breastfeed; and
WHEREAS, Breastfeeding provides ideal nutrition for infants
and contributes to their healthy growth and development; and

WHEREAS, Research suggests that breastfed babies have a lower
risk of acquiring the following:
(1) Asthma.
(2) Childhood leukemia.
(3) Childhood obesity.
(4) Ear infections.
(5) Eczema.
(6) Lower respiratory infections.
(7) Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
(8) Type 2 diabetes.
WHEREAS, Breastfeeding also improves the health and healing
of mothers following childbirth and leads to a lower risk of
acquiring the following:
(1) Type 2 diabetes.
(2) Certain types of breast cancer.
(3) Ovarian cancer.
WHEREAS, Breastfeeding saves money for families and the
nation as a whole; and
WHEREAS, The United States could save billions of dollars per
year if more babies were breastfed as medical care costs are
lower for fully breastfed infants than never-breastfed infants;
and
WHEREAS, Breastfeeding also leads to a more productive work
force as mothers who breastfeed miss less time from work to care
for sick infants than mothers who feed their infants formula;
and
WHEREAS, It is important that this Commonwealth support
actions taken to set up breastfeeding or mother-friendly
workplaces, including recognition for breastfeeding-friendly
employers and a greater awareness of the right of working women

to breastfeed; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
week of August 1 through August 7, 2015, as "World Breastfeeding
Week" in Pennsylvania and support women who breastfeed and
policies that make workplaces more friendly to working mothers
who breastfeed.
