A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Americans
with Disabilities Act.
WHEREAS, The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA),
the world's first comprehensive civil rights law for persons
with disabilities, was signed into law on July 26, 1990; and
WHEREAS, Described as the Emancipation Proclamation for the
disability community, the ADA prohibits discrimination on the
basis of a disability or impairment; and
WHEREAS, Modeled after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and
section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the ADA stems
from collective efforts by advocates in the preceding decades
and is the most comprehensive disability rights legislation in
history; and
WHEREAS, The ADA's employment provisions prohibit
discrimination in job application procedures, hiring,
