A RESOLUTION
Congratulating the City of Coatesville upon the momentous
occasion of its centennial anniversary.
WHEREAS, The City of Coatesville traces its origins to the
18th century, when the earliest-recorded land holding in what is
now the city was made by the Fleming family in 1714; and
WHEREAS, In 1787, Moses Coates, a farmer and inventor,
acquired the land that now comprises the center of the city and
constructed a large addition to his home, the Brandywine
Mansion; and
WHEREAS, Town development began in earnest in 1810, when Jess
Kersey, a son-in-law of Mr. Coates, divided a portion of Mr.
Coates' land along the newly built highway into building lots
and called his project Coates Villa; and
WHEREAS, Isaac Pennock, a Quaker ironmaster, purchased Mr.
Coates' land and converted a saw mill on the property into the
Brandywine Iron Works and Nail Factory, marking the beginning of
the iron and steel industry in Coatesville and the genesis of
its most historic firm, The Lukens Steel Company; and

WHEREAS, The Lukens Steel Company's specialty steel products
were used by the United States Navy in the construction of its
nuclear submarine fleet and in the superstructure of the
original World Trade Center Towers in New York City; and
WHEREAS, The construction of the Philadelphia and Columbia
Railroad improved the area's travel and marketing opportunities
and facilitated shipments of plates from its mills, spurring
further growth; and
WHEREAS, In 1867, the villages of Coatesville and Midway
separated from Valley Township and incorporated as the Borough
of Coatesville; and
WHEREAS, On August 4, 1913, a petition, signed by 100
electors, requesting that steps be taken to make Coatesville a
city was placed before the borough council; and
WHEREAS, The petition was approved on April 27, 1915; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its proud history, the City of
Coatesville has been blessed with dedicated civic leaders who
have helped it to grow and flourish, as well as diligent and
productive residents who have helped it become an inspiring
presence in this Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
City of Coatesville upon the momentous occasion of its
centennial anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the City of Coatesville.
