A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 175th anniversary of the Borough of Newport.
WHEREAS, One hundred seventy-five years ago, the Borough of
Newport, Perry County, was formally established; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its history, this Juniata River community
has served as a major transportation artery for Pennsylvania,
first with canoes and river flatboats, and later with the
Pennsylvania Canal, the Pennsylvania Railroad and eventually
with the automobile age, the William Penn Highway and Highways
322/22; and
WHEREAS, The abundance of Perry County natural resources,
including agricultural, forest and mineral wealth of the county,
flowed through Newport to other markets, fostering trade and
commerce; and
WHEREAS, The second half of the 19th century saw the
establishment of industries dealing with iron, tanning, chemical
acids, lumber, brick and stone, bottling, textiles and

manufacturing; and
WHEREAS, This economic growth led to the construction of
hundreds of homes and businesses in that century, which today
results in more than 350 Newport buildings being listed in the
National Register of Historic Places; and
WHEREAS, In 1940, the Historical Society of Perry County
erected a centennial stone to honor the borough and the military
riders who during the War of 1812 crossed the Juniata River in
the Newport area carrying messages to the Canadian frontier;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
175th anniversary of the Borough of Newport and honor the work
and sacrifices of past generations who have bequeathed to this
generation and future generations of Newport residents economic
prosperity and the blessings of peace and liberty.
