A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the Jewish Healthcare Foundation of Pittsburgh on
its 25th anniversary.
WHEREAS, The Jewish Healthcare Foundation (JHF) was
established in 1990 with proceeds from the sale of Montefiore
Hospital, a health care institution financed and founded by
Pittsburgh's Jewish community; and
WHEREAS, Montefiore Hospital opened in 1908 to meet the
health care needs of a growing and underserved Jewish population
in western Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, Montefiore Hospital instituted Pittsburgh's first
night clinic for social diseases and facilitated periodic
checkups for underprivileged persons; and
WHEREAS, Montefiore Hospital's emphasis on compassion and
excellence in the delivery of health care services has informed
JHF's overall mission; and
WHEREAS, Today, JHF and its two operating arms, the

Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative and Health Careers
Futures, develop and manage programs, research, training and
grantmaking to improve patient care; and
WHEREAS, JHF's current focus is on promoting safety, best
practices and efficiency at the front lines of care and building
a work force to sustain this; and
WHEREAS, JHF supports programs such as the Pittsburgh
Regional Health Initiative; and
WHEREAS, JHF provides research and education on breast cancer
and promotes its early detection; and
WHEREAS, JHF initiatives have contributed to Greater
Pittsburgh's emergence as an international leader in biomedical
and biotechnology research; and
WHEREAS, Major accomplishments made possible with JHF support
include the establishment of the Jewish Association on Aging,
the Coordinated Care Network, the Squirrel Hill Kosher Super
Pantry and Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers of Southwestern
Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, JHF's outreach further encompasses the Caregivers
Training Institute to educate persons providing elder care and
Pittsburgh Elderhostel, now Road Scholar; and
WHEREAS, With a current endowment of nearly $140 million, JHF
has provided more than $120 million in grants and has leveraged
tens of millions of dollars in key public/private partnerships
related to health care; and
WHEREAS, In 2013, JHF provided $2.8 million in funding to the
Jewish community, including significant grants to the Jewish
Association on Aging and the Jewish Federation of Greater
Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, As the fiscal agent for State HIV/AIDS funding in

southwest Pennsylvania since 1992, JHF manages funds from
multiple government sources to facilitate delivery of health
care, support and housing services to eligible individuals
living with HIV/AIDS and administers prevention and education
programs for at-risk populations; and
WHEREAS, JHF's Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative is a
founding member of the Network for Regional Healthcare
Improvement, a national organization representing more than 30
regional collaboratives focused on improving patient experience
and population health while reducing the per capita cost of
health care; and
WHEREAS, JHF has effectively improved health care quality and
efficiency for the entire Pittsburgh region and especially its
most vulnerable populations and has earned recognition as an
invaluable asset to our Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, This year marks JHF's 25th anniversary as a driving
force behind stronger public health systems and coordinated
community outreach in this Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
Jewish Healthcare Foundation of Pittsburgh on its 25th
anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
Dr. Karen Wolk Feinstein, President and Chief Executive Officer,
Jewish Healthcare Foundation, Centre City Tower, Suite 2400, 650
Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
