A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 160th anniversary of the YMCA of York County
and honoring the many years of service and dedication to
communities across York County.
WHEREAS, In 1844, George Williams, a 22-year-old farmer-
turned-department-store-worker, joined 11 friends in London to
organize the first YMCA as a refuge for Bible study and prayer
with a focus on addressing social needs in the community; and
WHEREAS, Inspired by the stories of the YMCA in England, a
retired Boston sea captain, Thomas Valentine Sullivan, noticed a
similar need in the United States and created the first YMCA in
the United States at the Old South Church in Boston on December
29, 1851; and
WHEREAS, Four years later, the YMCA of York County was
formed; and
WHEREAS, Since 1855, the YMCA of York County has been devoted
to the application of Christian principles in response to

community needs; and
WHEREAS, Today, the YMCA of York County fosters programs
focused on building healthy spirit, mind and body while
developing and practicing the Christian principles of faith,
hope, love, honesty, respect and responsibility; and
WHEREAS, As a catalyst for community collaboration, the YMCA
of York County welcomes and connects diverse demographic
populations in a shared goal of developing skills and achieving
greater health; and
WHEREAS, The YMCA of York County is a leader in providing
need-based programming centered on building strong kids, strong
families and strong communities; and
WHEREAS, The YMCA of York County believes that all youth
deserve the opportunity to discover themselves and their own
potential; and
WHEREAS, With a focus on youth development, healthy living
and social responsibility, the YMCA of York County nurtures the
potential of every youth and teen; and
WHEREAS, Through a mission concentrated on balance, the YMCA
of York County encourages good health and fosters connections
through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests; and
WHEREAS, As a result, many youth, adults and families of York
County receive the support, guidance and resources necessary to
achieve greater health and well-being; and
WHEREAS, For 160 years, the YMCA of York County has been
listening and responding to the most critical social needs of
York County residents and communities; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
160th anniversary of the YMCA of York County and honor the many
years of service and dedication to communities across York
