A RESOLUTION
Designating June 8, 2015, as "Mutual Insurance Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, This Commonwealth was is the birthplace of the
United States insurance industry; and
WHEREAS, The first insurance company in the United States was
a mutual insurance company, the Philadelphia Contributorship,
which was founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1753, in Philadelphia;
and
WHEREAS, Mutual insurance companies are a major economic
force in this Commonwealth with $3.4 billion in property and
casualty insurance premiums annually used to pay claims and
salaries of employees; and
WHEREAS, Mutual insurance companies are also a significant
contributor to State and local governments because of the
premium taxes those companies pay to the Commonwealth and
property taxes paid to municipalities and school districts; and
WHEREAS, The contribution of mutual insurance companies to
Pennsylvania communities cannot be overstated given that mutual

insurance companies are at the core of community service,
provide jobs and contribute significantly to the cultural and
social life of their communities; and
WHEREAS, Since 1990, the Pennsylvania Association of Mutual
Insurance Companies has communicated the value of mutual
insurance companies to this Commonwealth and to consumers in
this Commonwealth by way of its annual "Mutual Insurance Day;"
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June 8,
2015, as "Mutual Insurance Day" in Pennsylvania in honor of the
60th observance of "Mutual Insurance Day" by the Pennsylvania
Association of Mutual Insurance Companies and wish the managers,
employees and policyholders of mutual insurance companies good
fortune in the days to come.
