A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Mason-Dixon Tri-State
Marker boundary point for Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware
and celebrating the dedication of the Tri-State Marker Trail
on June 6, 2015.
WHEREAS, On June 6, 1765, British surveyors Charles Mason and
Jeremiah Dixon set a wooden marker at the point of intersection
of the west line at the northern boundary of the Province of
Maryland with the north line at the boundary between Maryland
and the lower three counties of the Province of Pennsylvania
that would later become Delaware; and
WHEREAS, The survey divided the lands of the Calverts in the
Province of Maryland and the lands controlled by William Penn in
the Province of Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, The marker was fixed to settle a long-running border
dispute involving tracts between the 39th and 40th parallels
under the original 17th century charters; and

WHEREAS, Surveyors still admire the accuracy of Charles Mason
and Jeremiah Dixon, given the instruments of the time, and honor
their incredible dedication and bravery as they cut their way
through more than 230 miles of largely untamed wilderness from
1763 through 1767 to complete the longest linear survey
undertaken in the New World; and
WHEREAS, On June 6, 2015, the Friends of White Clay Creek
Preserve and Wilmington Trail Club are celebrating the
accomplishments of the Mason-Dixon survey and dedicating the
completed northern segment of the Tri-State Marker Trail in
conjunction with "National Trails Day"; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
250th anniversary of the Mason-Dixon Tri-State Marker boundary
point for Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware and celebrate the
dedication of the Tri-State Marker Trail on June 6, 2015; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the Friends of White Clay Creek Preserve, a chapter of the
Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation, in care of White Clay
Creek Preserve, 405 Sharpless Road, Landenberg, PA 19350-0172.
