A RESOLUTION
Honoring the Duquesne University Tamburitzans in the City of
Pittsburgh.
WHEREAS, The Duquesne University Tamburitzans are the
longest-running multicultural song and dance company in the
United States; and
WHEREAS, Headquartered in Pittsburgh, the company's members
are full-time Duquesne University students who receive
scholarships for their activities; and
WHEREAS, The Tamburitzans were created in 1937 by Dr. A.
Lester Pierce, who brought his "Slavonic Tamburitza Orchestra"
from St. Edward's University of Austin, Texas, to Pittsburgh,
where the group was well received by the region's diverse ethnic
communities; and
WHEREAS, The Tamburitzans mission is to provide deserving
students an education and to perpetuate the varying folk

cultures and traditions of Eastern Europe; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, the Tamburitzans have recorded
albums and have toured extensively, sometimes internationally,
performing music and dance mainly from Eastern Europe and its
neighboring folk cultures; and
WHEREAS, The Tamburitzans are affectionately known as "the
Tammies" in some circles; and
WHEREAS, Besides producing the longest-running live stage
show in the country, the Tamburitzans organization is also a
cultural and historical legacy at Duquesne University and in
Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, A part of Duquesne University's Division of Student
Life, the Tamburitzans Department is housed in the Tamburitzans
Administration Building; and
WHEREAS, It is home to offices, rehearsal space, a wardrobe
department, a library, special collections and displays,
hundreds of books, costumes and instruments, as well as a
significant music and film collection; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its 75-year history, the Duquesne
University Tamburitzans organization has allowed the traditions
of the past to live on through music, dance and many cultural
resources; and
WHEREAS, This tradition remains not only in Pittsburgh but
throughout the United States, Canada and Europe; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the
Duquesne University Tamburitzans; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the Duquesne University Tamburitzans, 1801 Boulevard of the
Allies, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
