A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of
Philadelphia's South 9th Street Italian Market.
WHEREAS, Antonio Palumbo, an Italian immigrant, opened a
neighborhood boarding house for his fellow Italian immigrants in
the mid-to-late 1880s; and
WHEREAS, In increasing numbers, businesses surrounded the
boarding house to serve the neighboring community and the
businesses grew to form the largest outdoor continuous market in
the nation; and
WHEREAS, Providing the necessary goods and services to the
community while promoting commercial and economic development,
the market grew to encompass the area along 9th Street from
Wharton Street to Fitzwater Street; and
WHEREAS, In 1915, the South 9th Street Businessmen's

Association was established, a nonprofit organization dedicated
to the unification of all businesses within its boundaries and
to the preservation of the South 9th Street Italian Market for
the betterment and common good of the surrounding community and
the city; and
WHEREAS, Encouraging the exploration of a variety of
cultures, the South 9th Street Italian Market provides an
atmosphere reminiscent of a medieval bazaar, inspiring its
patrons with the scents and tastes of authentic regional
cuisines; and
WHEREAS, Holding a one-of-a-kind annual celebration the third
weekend in May, the market entices visitors to the city to
sample Italian delicacies, embrace history, shop for authentic
foods and enjoy live entertainment; and
WHEREAS, Embracing and reflecting new waves of immigrants,
the South 9th Street Italian Market has continued to diversify
over the years; and
WHEREAS, Working together to preserve this historic
marketplace, more than 100 committed market vendors have
dedicated themselves to securing its future for the enjoyment of
future generations; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
100th anniversary of the establishment of Philadelphia's South
9th Street Italian Market; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize this
landmark market for preserving the history of a diverse
neighborhood of immigrants over the past 100 years while
maintaining the social and economic development of the City of
Philadelphia and this Commonwealth.
