A RESOLUTION
Recognizing May 4, 2015, as "Crossing Guard Appreciation Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Commonwealth municipalities place a high priority on
preserving the health and welfare of our children, especially
with respect to our school-aged youth through the utilization of
adult crossing guards; and
WHEREAS, Each and every school day, thousands of dedicated
Pennsylvanians, assuming the invaluable and often thankless role
of adult crossing guard, spend countless hours assisting our
children and youth cross busy intersections as they arrive and
depart from school; and
WHEREAS, As veritable role models, adult crossing guards
assist our children with developing the skills necessary to
cross streets safely at all times, help with reminding drivers
of the presence of pedestrians and provide parents with a
greater sense of comfort and reassurance regarding the well-

being of their children; and
WHEREAS, According to the most recent data provided by the
Bureau of Labor Statistics, Pennsylvania has a total of 4,220
adult crossing guards, who earn a median hourly wage of $12.59,
excluding volunteer adult crossing guards; and
WHEREAS, A 2005 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration reported that 275 school-age children 5 to 15
years of age were killed and 15,000 were injured in
pedestrian/motor vehicle crashes; and
WHEREAS, According to the National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health, from 1998 through 2008, 120 adult crossing
guards lost their lives on the job in the United States; and
WHEREAS, In light of these sobering statistics, the need to
provide training for adult crossing guards is essential to
preserving the safety and lives of our school-age children; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs
have played an integral role in both ensuring that our adult
crossing guards are adequately trained and that more of our
children are bicycling and walking to schools safely on a daily
basis; and
WHEREAS, The SRTS programs provide technical assistance to
local municipalities for the purpose of helping them start their
own SRTS programs; and
WHEREAS, The efforts of our Commonwealth's adult crossing
guards, in tandem with the work of the SRTS programs, is
directly responsible for making this Commonwealth one of the
safest and most secure places in the nation for our school-age
children to travel to and from school; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 4,
2015, as "Crossing Guard Appreciation Day" in Pennsylvania; and

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives acknowledge both
the efforts and the indispensable role that adult crossing
guards assume in this Commonwealth.
