A RESOLUTION
Designating April 21, 2015, as "Independent College and
University Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, April 21 is Independent College Day at the Capitol,
when many students, advisors and friends will visit members of
the General Assembly to discuss the benefits and needs of
private higher education in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is blessed to have more than 90
independent nonprofit colleges and universities throughout this
Commonwealth serving nearly 300,000 students, or 41% of the
total students enrolled in this Commonwealth.
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's independent colleges and universities
serve more than 58,910 low-income students; and
WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities in
Pennsylvania award 48% of all bachelor's degrees for all

students and 52% of all bachelor's degrees for minorities; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's independent colleges and universities
educate more working adults than public four-year universities,
which enables these adults to increase their knowledge and value
in the workplace; and
WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities in
Pennsylvania provide 49% of all degrees and employ over 75,000
people on their campuses; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's independent colleges and
universities' missions include strengthening families and
communities, encouraging civic activity and working toward a
better world through strong international and national programs;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate April
21, 2015, as "Independent College and University Day" in
Pennsylvania and express congratulations and appreciation to the
independent colleges and universities across this Commonwealth.
