A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 3 through 9, 2015, as "National
Postcard Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Long before the days of e-mail, social media and
smart phones, postcards delivered scenes of faraway places and
greetings to family and friends across the country; and
WHEREAS, The United States Postal Service began to issue
plain, stamped mailing cards in 1873; and
WHEREAS, Within 20 years a company sold "souvenir cards,"
which included a picture on the front and a space for the
address but no message on the back; and
WHEREAS, In 1907 the United States Postal Service allowed
postcard designers to divide the back of postcards so that
people sending them could place both an address and a message on
them; and
WHEREAS, For many people, postcards become keepsakes; and
WHEREAS, Sending picture postcards through the mail in this

country is a custom participated in by millions of its citizens,
and collecting postcards has developed into a hobby for many
people; and
WHEREAS, The leisure pastime of collecting and studying
postcards, known as deltiology, has led to the formation of 106
postcard clubs in the United States and more than 100 postcard
shows annually; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
week of May 3 through 9, 2015, as "National Postcard Week" in
Pennsylvania.
