A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 175th anniversary of the establishment of the
Borough of Zelienople.
WHEREAS, A celebration marking the 175th anniversary of the
Borough of Zelienople in Butler County is being held from May 26
through 30, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The 10,000-acre tract in western Pennsylvania on
which the borough now stands was acquired in the early 19th
century by Baron Detmar Basse from Germany; and
WHEREAS, The early settlement, on the left bank of the
Connoquenessing Creek, was named for Baron Basse's eldest
daughter, ZĂ©lie; and
WHEREAS, The settlement included a sawmill, brickyard and one
of the area's first charcoal blast furnaces; and
WHEREAS, The furnace, located in nearby Beaver County, fueled
the start of the steel industry in our nation along with other

early furnaces; and
WHEREAS, Baron Basse's multistory brick, stone and frame home
called Bassenheim attested to his influence until its
destruction by fire in the 1840s; and
WHEREAS, German immigrant Christian Buhl, a hatter and
furrier who would serve as a Butler County associate judge,
built the Buhl House on South Main Street in 1805; and
WHEREAS, The Passavant House on South Main Street, built in
1809, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and
serves as headquarters of the Zelienople Historical Society; and
WHEREAS, Zelienople was incorporated as a borough in 1840;
and
WHEREAS, In the 1870s the first passenger train on the
Pittsburgh & Western Railroad reached the borough; and
WHEREAS, Schools, churches, industries, residential
development, nonprofit organizations and local government have
flourished in the decades which followed; and
WHEREAS, The borough has employed a full-time borough manager
since 1994; and
WHEREAS, The borough's population in 2014 was recorded as
3,815 people; and
WHEREAS, The House of Representatives joins in celebrating
the borough's rich history, proudly noting its origin on the
western frontier and the growth and quality of life sustained
there from its incorporation to the present day; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
175th anniversary of the establishment of the Borough of
Zelienople; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the Borough of Zelienople, 111 West New Castle Street,
