A RESOLUTION
Recognizing March 10, 2015, as "National Women and Girls
HIV/AIDS Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day" is
an annual, nationwide observance that sheds light on the impact
of HIV/AIDS on women and girls; and
WHEREAS, According to the Office of Women's Health in the
United States Department of Health and Human Services,
approximately one in four people living with HIV in the United
States are women 13 years of age or older; and
WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
estimates that more than half of individuals 13 to 24 years of
age living with HIV infection are undiagnosed; and
WHEREAS, Women of color, particularly African-American women,
have been especially hard hit by the HIV/AIDS epidemic and
represent both the majority of women living with the disease and

the newly infected; and
WHEREAS, Women with and at risk for HIV/AIDS face several
challenges in securing essential services and information; and
WHEREAS, Information and assistance in overcoming
socioeconomic and structural barriers, such as poverty, cultural
inequities and sexual violence, are vital in addition to
addressing the issue of women placing the needs of their
families above their own; and
WHEREAS, Women comprised 26%, or 5,232, of deaths among
people with an HIV diagnosis in 2010; and
WHEREAS, Every year on March 10 and throughout the month of
March, Federal, State and community organizations come together
to offer support and hope, reduce stigma, share information and
empower women and girls to learn the importance of HIV/AIDS
prevention, care and treatment; and
WHEREAS, This year marks the 10th observance of "National
Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day"; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize March
10, 2015, as "National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day"
in Pennsylvania and urge all residents to strongly support this
day and participate in events planned to commemorate the
occasion.
