A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 60th anniversary of the National Association
of Social Workers.
WHEREAS, The National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
was established in 1955 after the consolidation of seven social
work organizations; and
WHEREAS, NASW's primary functions include promoting the
professional development of its members, establishing and
maintaining professional standards of practice, advancing sound
social policies and providing services to protect its members
and enhance social workers' professional status; and
WHEREAS, Social workers have been on the front lines of every
major social change in our nation since the late 19th century;
and
WHEREAS, NASW spearheaded efforts throughout the 20th century

to ensure the equal treatment of all individuals, including
advocating for enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; and
WHEREAS, NASW and social workers have been and continue to be
champions for low-income and elderly persons, from the
establishment of Medicare through President Lyndon Johnson's war
on poverty to the present day; and
WHEREAS, The NASW Code of Ethics, established in 1996,
ensures that social work professionals at all practice levels
are held to the highest standards of professional conduct; and
WHEREAS, The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, called
for the skills of social workers as leading providers of mental
health care in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Social workers provided grief counseling and crisis
intervention at companies, hospitals, community mental health
centers and schools and participated in numerous Red Cross and
Salvation Army emergency assistance teams in response to the
attacks; and
WHEREAS, NASW's support of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act,
signed by President Barack Obama in 2009, further contributed to
the achievement of gender equity in matters of law and justice;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
60th anniversary of the National Association of Social Workers
and offer best wishes for continuing support of social workers
and the social work profession.
