A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and ultimate sacrifice of Lieutenant Joyce
Craig, a Philadelphia firefighter who lost her life in the
line of duty, and expressing condolences upon her passing.
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Joyce Craig, a decorated Philadelphia
firefighter, tragically lost her life in the line of duty on
December 9, 2014, at the age of 37; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Craig was born on June 7, 1977, and as a
child dreamed of committing her life to public service by
becoming a firefighter; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Craig graduated from Philadelphia's
Murrell Dobbins Vocational High School in 1995 and began
achieving her dreams by subsequently earning her EMT
certification; and

WHEREAS, On December 8, 2003, Lieutenant Craig entered the
Philadelphia Fire Academy as a member of the 178th Cadet class
and graduated on March 26, 2004; and
WHEREAS, During her 11 years of dedicated service at the
Philadelphia Fire Department, Lieutenant Craig served at Engine
9 and Ladder 21 in Mount Airy, Engine 45 in North Philadelphia
and one of the busiest companies in Philadelphia, Engine 64 in
Lawncrest; and
WHEREAS, A decorated first responder, Lieutenant Craig was
revered for her hard work, bravery and professionalism and
heralded by Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer as a
"firefighter's firefighter"; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Craig and colleagues from Engine 69
Platoon "C" received a Unit Citation for their efforts in
rescuing two adults from a house fire in September 2007; and
WHEREAS, On Tuesday, December 9, 2014, Lieutenant Craig
tragically lost her life responding to a fire at a home in the
West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, True to her strong work ethic and commitment to her
profession, Lieutenant Craig was working an overtime shift for
Engine 73 on the day of her passing and assisted with the rescue
of an elderly resident while battling the fire; and
WHEREAS, One of only 165 women among approximately 2,158
members of the Philadelphia Fire Department at the time of her
passing, Lieutenant Craig was the first female firefighter to
die in the line of duty in Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Craig was posthumously awarded the rank
of Lieutenant in recognition of her heroism, passion for
firefighting and outstanding service to the residents of
Philadelphia; and

WHEREAS, Lieutenant Craig is survived by her deeply beloved
16-year-old son and 16-month-old daughter; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life
and ultimate sacrifice of Lieutenant Joyce Craig and express
most sincere condolences to her family, friends and colleagues
upon her passing; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
the family of Lieutenant Joyce Craig.
