A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 300th anniversary of the establishment of the
Borough of Hatboro.
WHEREAS, In the early 18th century, a small farming village
named Billet was established along Old York Road, a stage coach
route between Philadelphia and New York and former Indian trail,
in southeastern Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, The land on which Billet was established was
purchased on a warrant from William Penn by the family of
Nicholas More; and
WHEREAS, In its early years, the borough maintained a rural
character, consisting primarily of farms and a few businesses;
and
WHEREAS, John Dawson, a hatter from England, built a house in
Billet that later became known as the Crooked Billet Inn; and
WHEREAS, The village of Billet became known as Hatborough in

1740; and
WHEREAS, Several times during 1777, George Washington and his
troops passed through the borough in pursuit of British troops;
and
WHEREAS, On May 1, 1778, during the British occupation of
Philadelphia, a Revolutionary War skirmish known as the Battle
of Crooked Billet took place in the borough; and
WHEREAS, On August 26, 1871, the Borough of Hatboro was
officially incorporated from Moreland Township; and
WHEREAS, The mid-20th century saw an increase in the
population of the borough as various companies located nearby to
support the war effort; and
WHEREAS, The borough has continued to flourish and its
educational strength has never wavered; and
WHEREAS, This year marks the 300th anniversary of the
establishment of the Borough of Hatboro; and
WHEREAS, It is fitting to commemorate this important
milestone due to the contributions the Borough of Hatboro has
made to the history of this nation and our Commonwealth;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
300th anniversary of the establishment of the Borough of
Hatboro.
