A RESOLUTION
Recognizing January 17, 2015, as the birthday of Benjamin
Franklin.
WHEREAS, We celebrate the life of Benjamin Franklin, past
Chief Clerk and Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of
Representatives; and
WHEREAS, Benjamin Franklin became famous as a scientist, an
inventor, a statesman, a printer, a philosopher, a musician and
a philanthropist through his work for the betterment of
Philadelphia, the Commonwealth and the United States; and
WHEREAS, Franklin had a strong belief that good citizenship
included an obligation of public service; and
WHEREAS, In addition to signing the five founding documents
of the United States, Franklin also helped in drafting two of
these momentous documents, the Declaration of Independence and

the Constitution; and
WHEREAS, Franklin was interested in practical applications,
which led to his invention of the lightning rod, the smokeless
fireplace, the glass armonica and bifocal glasses; and
WHEREAS, Driven by a strong sense of civic duty, Franklin
greatly involved himself in his community and founded many of
America's first institutions, including the American
Philosophical Society, the University of Pennsylvania, the Union
Fire Company and the Library Company of Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Benjamin Franklin was one of the most extraordinary
human beings the world has ever known and is often referred to
as the most brilliant man of the 18th century; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize January
17, 2015, as the birthday of Benjamin Franklin.
