A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating the month of November 2014 as "Pancreatic Cancer
2Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, In 2014, an estimated 46,420 people will be
4diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States and 39,590
5people will die from the disease; and

6WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancers, is
7currently the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United
8States and is projected to become the second by 2020; and

9WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer with a
10five-year relative survival rate in the single digits at just
116%; and

12WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer symptoms generally present late
13stage and 73% of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first
14year of their diagnosis, while 94% of pancreatic cancer patients
15die within the first five years; and

16WHEREAS, Approximately 1,990 deaths caused by pancreatic
17cancer will occur in Pennsylvania in 2014; and

1WHEREAS, The Federal Recalcitrant Cancer Research Act of 2012
2directs the National Cancer Institute to develop a scientific
3framework or strategic plan to fight pancreatic cancer and other
4deadly cancers; and

5WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the national
6organization serving the pancreatic cancer community in
7Pennsylvania and nationwide through a comprehensive approach
8that includes public policy, research funding, patient services
9and public awareness and education related to developing
10effective treatments and a cure for pancreatic cancer; and

11WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and its
12affiliates in this Commonwealth support those patients currently
13battling pancreatic cancer and are committed to nothing less
14than a cure; and

15WHEREAS, The health and well-being of the residents of this
16Commonwealth are enhanced as a direct result of increased
17awareness about pancreatic cancer and research into early
18detection, causes and effective treatments; therefore be it

19RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of November
202014 as "Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
