A RESOLUTION

 

1Observing the week of October 5 through 11, 2014, as "Fire
2Prevention Week 2014" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, The National Fire Protection Association announced
4the theme of Fire Prevention Week 2014 to be "Working Smoke
5Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!"; and

6WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week occurs annually during the week
7in which October 9 falls, commemorating the Great Chicago Fire
8of 1871; and

9WHEREAS, In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first
10National Fire Prevention Day proclamation; and

11WHEREAS, According to the National Archives and Records
12Administration's Library Information Center, Fire Prevention
13Week is the longest running public health and safety observance
14on record; and

15WHEREAS, The National Fire Protection Association works in
16coordination with partnering companies, organizations and fire

1departments to promote Fire Protection Week and its fire safety
2messages throughout North America; and

3WHEREAS, According to statistics, having a working smoke
4alarm in the home cuts the risk of dying in a fire in half; and

5WHEREAS, On average, three out of five home deaths occur in
6fires where there are either no smoke alarms or no working smoke
7alarms; and

8WHEREAS, In one-quarter of the home fire deaths, smoke alarms
9were present but did not sound; and

10WHEREAS, Nearly 3,000 people continue to die in fires each
11year, with most of those deaths occurring in homes; and

12WHEREAS, The vast majority of home fire deaths are
13preventable, and working smoke alarms play a big role in helping
14to reduce those numbers; therefore be it

15RESOLVED, That the Senate observe the week of October 5
16through 11, 2014, as "Fire Prevention Week 2014" in
17Pennsylvania.
