A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating the week of July 6 through 13, 2014, as "Brain
2Aneurysm Awareness Week" and July 12, 2014, as "Brain
3Aneurysm Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.

4WHEREAS, An estimated 1 out of every 50 people in the United
5States has a brain aneurysm, with an aneurysm more likely to
6occur in women than in men by a three-to-two ratio; and

7WHEREAS, Brain aneurysms are most likely to occur in people
8between 35 and 60 years of age and there are typically no
9warning signs; and

10WHEREAS, Various risk factors can contribute to the formation
11of a brain aneurysm, including smoking, hypertension and a
12family history of brain aneurysms; and

13WHEREAS, An unruptured brain aneurysm can lead to double
14vision, vision loss, loss of sensation, weakness, loss of
15balance, incoordination and speech problems; and

16WHEREAS, A brain aneurysm is often not discovered until it
17ruptures and causes a subarachnoid hemorrhage; and

18WHEREAS, A subarachnoid hemorrhage can lead to brain damage,

1hydrocephalus, stroke and death; and

2WHEREAS, Each year, more than 30,000 people in the United
3States suffer from ruptured brain aneurysms and 40% of those
4persons die as a result of the condition; and

5WHEREAS, Annually, between 3,000 and 4,500 people in the
6United States with ruptured brain aneurysms die before ever
7reaching the hospital; and

8WHEREAS, A number of advancements have been made in recent
9years regarding the detection of aneurysms, including the
10computerized tomography (CT) scan, the magnetic resonance
11imaging (MRI) test and the cerebral arteriogram and early
12detection can save lives; and

13WHEREAS, Various research studies are currently being
14conducted in the United States in order to better understand,
15prevent and treat brain aneurysms; and

16WHEREAS, Brain aneurysm survivors, their families and
17friends, along with families and friends who lost a loved one to
18a brain aneurysm, are working tirelessly across this
19Commonwealth to raise funding for those research studies; and

20WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh 5K Run/Walk for Brain Aneurysm
21Awareness has been established as a new resource for those
22efforts; and

23WHEREAS, The inaugural event for the Pittsburgh 5K Run/Walk
24for Brain Aneurysm Awareness will be held at Pittsburgh's North
25Shore Great Lawn on Saturday, July 12, 2014; therefore be it

26RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize, commend and support the
27organizers, volunteers and participants and wish them great
28success; and be it further

29RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of July 6
30through 13, 2014, as "Brain Aneurysm Awareness Week" and July

112, 2014, as "Brain Aneurysm Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
