A RESOLUTION
1Recognizing the week of May 3 through 11, 2014, as "National
2Travel and Tourism Week" and May 5, 2014, as "Tourism Day" in
3Pennsylvania.
4WHEREAS, National Travel and Tourism Week and Tourism Day
5are designed to draw attention to and recognize the economic,
6social and cultural impacts of travel and tourism in this
7Commonwealth and the United States; and
8WHEREAS, National Travel and Tourism Week was established in
91983 when the Congress of the United States passed a joint
10resolution designating a week in May 1984 as National Travel and
11Tourism Week and President Ronald Reagan signed a Presidential
12Proclamation urging citizens to observe the week with
13appropriate ceremonies and activities; and
14WHEREAS, Travel and tourism consistently rank as one of the
15greatest generators of economic activity and jobs for this
16Commonwealth; and
17WHEREAS, Tourism is the second largest industry in this
1Commonwealth, contributing approximately $38.4 billion in
2visitor spending and generating more than $4 billion in State
3and local taxes in 2012; and
4WHEREAS, One out of every 16 workers in this Commonwealth is
5supported by travel and tourism accounting for 470,953 jobs,
6equivalent to 6.5% of the State's total employment; and
7WHEREAS, This Commonwealth hosted nearly 192.3 million
8domestic and international travelers for business and leisure in
92012; and
10WHEREAS, Travel and tourism in this Commonwealth allow
11Pennsylvanians and other travelers to see the spectacular
12natural scenery, world-class cities, historic towns, dozens of
13museums and award-winning entertainment and cultural events this
14Commonwealth has to offer; therefore be it
15RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of May 3 through
1611, 2014, as "National Travel and Tourism Week" and May 5, 2014,
17as "Tourism Day" in Pennsylvania.
