A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating April 22, 2014, as "Governor James Pollock
2Remembrance Day" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, Former Pennsylvania Governor James Pollock served as
4the director of the United States Mint in Philadelphia from 1861
5to 1866 and from 1869 to 1873; and

6WHEREAS, Governor Pollock was directed by President Abraham
7Lincoln in 1864 to craft a motto that would help reunite the
8country; and

9WHEREAS, Governor Pollock is credited with developing the
10motto "In God We Trust"; and

11WHEREAS, April 22, 2014, marks the 150th anniversary of the
12official adoption of the motto, still in use by the United
13States Mint; and

14WHEREAS, A native of Milton, Northumberland County, James
15Pollock served as Pennsylvania's 13th Governor from 1855 to
161858; and

17WHEREAS, As Governor, he signed the charter to establish The

1Pennsylvania State University and was among the founding board
2of trustees; and

3WHEREAS, Governor Pollock served as the president judge of
4Pennsylvania's Eighth Judicial District from 1850 to 1854; and

5WHEREAS, Governor Pollock served in the Congress of the
6United States as a Representative of Pennsylvania's 13th
7Congressional District from 1844 to 1849; and

8WHEREAS, Governor Pollock was an early supporter of Samuel
9Morse and was an instrumental factor in convincing Congress to
10appropriate funds to establish the first telegraph transmission
11lines; and

12WHEREAS, Governor Pollock was a major advocate in Congress
13for the establishment of a transcontinental railroad; and

14WHEREAS, Governor Pollock served as the district attorney for
15Northumberland County from 1836 to 1838; and

16WHEREAS, Governor Pollock passed away on April 19, 1890, at
1779 years of age; therefore be it

18RESOLVED, That the Senate designate April 22, 2014, as
19"Governor James Pollock Remembrance Day" in Pennsylvania; and be
20it further

21RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the life and service of
22former Governor James Pollock.
