A RESOLUTION

 

1Honoring the life of former Senator Harold "Hal" F. Mowery, Jr.,
2and extending condolences to his family.

3WHEREAS, Former Senator Harold "Hal" F. Mowery, Jr., who
4dedicated more than 25 years to public service, died March 3,
52014, at 84 years of age; and

6WHEREAS, Senator Mowery graduated from Mechanicsburg Area
7Senior High School and earned degrees in economics and
8psychology from Dickinson College; and

9WHEREAS, Senator Mowery was a member of the House of
10Representatives, where he represented the 87th District, from
11January 1977 to November 1990; and

12WHEREAS, Senator Mowery was selected as the Republican
13nominee for Lieutenant Governor in 1990; and

14WHEREAS, Senator Mowery served as a member of the Senate,

1where he represented the 31st District, from January 1993
2until November 2004; and

3WHEREAS, Senator Mowery served as the chairman of the Public
4Health and Welfare Committee and as vice chairman of the
5Education Committee; and

6WHEREAS, Senator Mowery also served on the Banking and
7Insurance Committee, Law and Justice Committee, Labor and
8Industry Committee, Rules and Executive Nominations Committee
9and the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority; and

10WHEREAS, Senator Mowery became one of the most respected and
11beloved members of the Senate; and

12WHEREAS, Senator Mowery was recognized as a leader on issues
13related to finance, banking, insurance, commercial transactions,
14health care and education; and

15WHEREAS, In 2002, Senator Mowery advocated for the enactment
16of a major piece of health care reform, known as the Medical
17Care Availability and Reduction of Error (Mcare) Act; and

18WHEREAS, Senator Mowery was a very active member in his
19community; and

20WHEREAS, Senator Mowery served on the Camp Hill School Board
21and the Lion Foundation, and was instrumental in facilitating
22the building of the Grace Milliman Pollock Performing Arts
23Center; and

24WHEREAS, Senator Mowery was a supporter of the United
25Methodist Home for Children, where he and his wife were
26instrumental in starting the Have a Heart for Kids gala; and

27WHEREAS, Senator Mowery is survived by his beloved wife and
28life partner, Phyllis, three children, eight grandchildren and
29one great-granddaughter; and

30WHEREAS, Senator Mowery will be remembered for his unceasing

1dedication to public and community service; and

2WHEREAS, Senator Mowery's infectious smile and optimism will
3be sorely missed; therefore be it

4RESOLVED, That the Senate express profound sorrow over the
5loss of this outstanding public servant; and be it further

6RESOLVED, That the Senate express gratitude for the service
7rendered and genuine friendship shared; and be it further

8RESOLVED, That the Senate extend condolences to the family of
9a cherished former colleague, the Honorable Harold "Hal" F.
10Mowery, Jr., and direct that a copy of this resolution be
11transmitted to his family.
