A RESOLUTION

 

1Recognizing the month of October 2013 as "Breast Cancer
2Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, Women's and men's health is essential to the health
4of our families, our communities and our society; and

5WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths
6in this Commonwealth in women between 25 and 54 years of age and
7primarily affects men between 60 and 70 years of age; and

8WHEREAS, Three of four cases of breast cancer arise in women
9with no known risk factors; and

10WHEREAS, Men are typically diagnosed at a late stage due to a
11lack of awareness that men can develop the disease; and

12WHEREAS, Breast cancer continues to be the most commonly
13diagnosed cancer in women in the United States, regardless of
14race or ethnicity; and

15WHEREAS, There are more than two million breast cancer
16survivors alive today in the United States; and

1WHEREAS, Nearly all breast cancers can be treated
2successfully if found early; and

3WHEREAS, When breast cancer is found at its earliest stage,
4the five-year survival rate is 100%; and

5WHEREAS, One in eight women and one in 1,000 men in the
6United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their
7lifetimes; therefore be it

8RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of October 2013
9as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania, applaud the
10thousands of professionals and volunteers in the fight against
11breast cancer and encourage all women and men to take advantage
12of the early detection services available to them.
