A RESOLUTION

 

1Recognizing the week of October 6 through 12, 2013, as "National
2Newspaper Week" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, Our nation's founders recognized, in their vision,
4that a democracy depends upon the convictions and actions of an
5informed public, and that its citizens must have access to the
6most complete and accurate information about their community,
7their nation and the world; and

8WHEREAS, The Commonwealth is the birthplace of our nation's
9independence, and the freedom enjoyed by the people of the
10United States, supported by the right to free speech and a free
11press, is a treasured principle upon which the Commonwealth and
12America thrive; and

13WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's newspapers have evolved through the
14centuries to meet the increasing needs and challenges of a
15diverse population to reflect the highest standards of
16journalism and public service, accuracy and fairness; and

17WHEREAS, Since 1940, the United States Newspaper Association
18managers have sponsored and supported "National Newspaper Week,"

1a week-long celebration emphasizing the importance of newspapers
2in fostering improved community service, participation and
3responsiveness in the everyday lives of citizens; therefore be
4it

5RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of October 6
6through 12, 2013, as "National Newspaper Week" in Pennsylvania;
7and be it further

8RESOLVED, That the Senate acknowledge the vital role played
9by the newspaper industry as a pillar of our democracy and
10congratulate the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association and its
11membership and affiliates upon the celebration of National
12Newspaper Week and for their role in encouraging an active
13citizenry and an informed public; and be it further

14RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
15the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association.
