A RESOLUTION

 

1Honoring the 50th anniversary of Sewickley Academy's Senior
2School.

3WHEREAS, Sewickley Academy was founded in 1838 as the
4Sewickley Academy School for Boys and in 1926 was reconfigured
5into the modern Sewickley Academy; and

6WHEREAS, In 1963, Sewickley Academy added its Senior School,
7a milestone which brought the school to the present
8prekindergarten through grade twelve campus, making the school
9the only private coeducational school in Pittsburgh at the time;
10and

11WHEREAS, In 1969, Sewickley Academy was the first school in
12the area to have a full computer program, at first in
13partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, then on its own
14when the school purchased a Digital PDP-81; and

15WHEREAS, Sewickley Academy's Global Studies program, which
16now boasts exchanges to seven countries, was born from the
17German Exchange, a program that first began in 1978 and which is

1still going strong today; and

2WHEREAS, The Academy's competitive athletic program, a
3hallmark of which is its no-cut policy, has won more than 20
4WPIAL Championships over the past five decades; and

5WHEREAS, "Ephemera," the Senior School's student-produced
6arts magazine, has earned many national and State awards year
7after year throughout the magazine's 27-year existence; and

8WHEREAS, The Academy's Senior School hosts a chapter of the
9Cum Laude Society, which is modeled after Phi Beta Kappa, and
10adheres to a student-led honor code; and

11WHEREAS, Historically, 100% of graduates of the Academy's
12Senior School attend a four-year college or university; and

13WHEREAS, Between the Class of 1966, Sewickley Academy's
14Senior School's first graduating class, and the Class of 2013,
153,142 seniors have graduated from the Academy; therefore be it

16RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the 50th anniversary of
17Sewickley Academy's Senior School.
