A RESOLUTION

 

1Honoring the life and service of the Most Reverend Joseph P.
2McFadden and expressing condolences on his death.

3WHEREAS, The Senate mourns the loss of the Most Reverend
4Joseph P. McFadden, the tenth Bishop of the Diocese of
5Harrisburg, who passed away on May 2, 2013, at the age of 65;
6and

7WHEREAS, Born in Philadelphia on May 22, 1947, Bishop
8McFadden was the son of the late Thomas and Ellen Griffin
9McFadden; and

10WHEREAS, He attended St. Thomas More High School and
11graduated from Saint Joseph University in 1969; and

12WHEREAS, He entered Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in 1976
13and was ordained into the priesthood on May 16, 1981, by
14Cardinal John Krol in the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and

1Paul; and

2WHEREAS, Initially assigned as Parochial Vicar at St.
3Laurence Parish in Highland Park, he was named Honorary Prelate
4to His Holiness Pope John Paul II with the title of Monsignor on
5May 29, 1991; and

6WHEREAS, In 1993, Bishop McFadden was appointed the first
7President of Cardinal O'Hara High School, and in 2001 he was
8assigned as Pastor of Saint Joseph Parish; and

9WHEREAS, Appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia in June
102004, he was ordained to the Episcopacy on July 28, 2004; and

11WHEREAS, Bishop McFadden was appointed the tenth Bishop of
12Harrisburg by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on June 22, 2010,
13and he was installed on August 18, 2010, at St. Patrick
14Cathedral; and

15WHEREAS, An advocate for Catholic education, he was President
16of the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference, Chairman of the United
17States Bishops' Committee on Catholic Education and a member of
18the Board of Trustees at Saint Vincent Seminary; and

19WHEREAS, Bishop McFadden represented many things to many
20people, among them a beloved family member, dedicated religious
21leader and avowed community steward who gave of his heart and
22time to enhance the quality of life of his family, his community
23and his congregations; therefore be it

24RESOLVED, That the Senate note with great sadness the passing
25of the Most Reverend Joseph P. McFadden, whose life greatly
26benefited all those who lived, served and worked with him and
27extend heartfelt condolences to his brother, John McFadden;
28sisters, Jane McFadden and Ellen McConney; and many other family
29members, friends, colleagues and parishioners; and be it further

30RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

1the family of the Most Reverend Joseph P. McFadden.
