A RESOLUTION
1Observing the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising as
2a symbol of the strength of all people against tyranny and
3evil.
4WHEREAS, The Senate regularly and rightfully marks historic
5events showcasing the strength of people against tyranny and
6evil; and
7WHEREAS, In 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland and by October
81940 had confined nearly 400,000 Polish Jews to a 3.5 square-
9mile Warsaw ghetto; and
10WHEREAS, In July 1942, the Nazis began expelling more than
11200,000 Jews from the Warsaw ghetto to concentration camps and
12extermination centers while telling them they were being taken
13to work on road projects and factories; and
14WHEREAS, By October 1942, only 60,000 Jews remained in the
15Warsaw ghetto; and
16WHEREAS, The remaining Jews, upon learning the true fate of
17those who had been expelled, built a system of underground
1tunnels and bunkers and armed themselves with grenades and
2explosives bought from the Polish underground; and
3WHEREAS, The Jews heard on the first night of Passover, April
419, 1943, that their own annihilation was imminent and defended
5themselves with Molotov cocktails, rifles and revolvers against
6the Nazi tanks, artillery planes and flame throwers that rolled
7into the Warsaw ghetto at 2 a.m.; and
8WHEREAS, The members of the Jewish resistance, vowing "to
9live with honor and to die with honor," held off the German
10attacks for 28 days; and
11WHEREAS, The Warsaw ghetto uprising has come to be viewed
12historically as an epic battle for the honor of all Jews
13murdered by the Nazis; and
14WHEREAS, April 19, 2013, represents the 70th anniversary of
15the Warsaw ghetto uprising; therefore be it
16RESOLVED, That the Senate observe the 70th anniversary of the
17Warsaw ghetto uprising as a symbol of the strength of all people
18against tyranny and evil.
