A RESOLUTION
1Designating the month of April 2013 as "Distracted Driving
2Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, Distracted driving is any activity that could divert
4a person's attention away from the primary task of driving; and
5WHEREAS, All distractions endanger driver, passenger and
6bystander safety; and
7WHEREAS, Distracted driving comes in various forms, including
8using a cell phone or other electronic device, eating and
9drinking, smoking, engaging in conversation and using a
10navigation system while driving; and
11WHEREAS, Distracted driving is not confined to a single
12cause, age group, level of education or driver demographic; and
13WHEREAS, Motor vehicle accidents resulting from distracted
14driving caused 10,567 accidents in 2011, an increase of more
15than 350 accidents from 2010; and
16WHEREAS, According to national statistics, 3,331 people were
1killed in crashes involving a distracted driver and 387,000
2people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a
3distracted driver in 2011; and
4WHEREAS, The best way to end distracted driving is to educate
5all Pennsylvanians about the danger it poses; therefore be it
6RESOLVED, That the Senate urge drivers to consider the lives
7of others on the road and avoid distracted driving; and be it
8further
9RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage parents, teens, teachers
10and community leaders to discuss the risk of distracted driving;
11and be it further
12RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of April 2013
13as "Distracted Driving Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
