2Johnstown, Cambria County, as the Clara Barton Memorial
3Bridge.

4The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
5hereby enacts as follows:

6Section 1. Clara Barton Memorial Bridge.

7(a) Findings.--

8(1) In 1882, after years of work, pioneer nurse Clara
9Barton's organization, the American National Red Cross, was
10officially established.

11(2) On June 5, 1889, approximately five days after the
12South Fork Dam broke in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Clara Barton
13and a group of Red Cross volunteers rode the train to the
14devastated town to help the survivors in one of the first
15major disaster responses for the organization.

16(3) Clara Barton and the Red Cross remained in the town
17for more than five months and provided aid to more than
1825,000 people by establishing feeding stations, building

1shelters and rendering medical care.

2(4) Clara Barton continued her work with the Red Cross
3helping others during times of disaster until her resignation
4in 1904 at 83 years of age. She died April 12, 1912, at 90
5years of age.

6(b) Designation.--The bridge located on State Route 3023,
7Johns Street, over Little Conemaugh River in Johnstown, Cambria
8County is hereby designated the Clara Barton Memorial Bridge.

9(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
10maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to
11traffic in both directions on the bridge.

12Section 2. This act shall take effect in 60 days.
