A RESOLUTION

 

1Directing the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives, in
2consultation with the Capitol Preservation Committee, to 
3prominently place a prisoners of war/missing in action chair 
4of honor in the Main Capitol Rotunda area during the days 
5surrounding National POW/MIA Recognition Day and Veteran's 
6Day and in other appropriate House of Representatives 
7locations as deemed appropriate by the Chief Clerk during the 
8remainder of the year.

9WHEREAS, The history of our nation was built upon the
10triumphs, struggles and sacrifices of the many men and women who
11have endured battle and hardship in defense of our nation's
12security and freedom; and

13WHEREAS, We have supported our soldiers in times of both war
14and peace and looked forward to their safe return; and

15WHEREAS, There remains, however, a group of these dedicated
16men and women, our prisoners of war/missing in action
17(POW/MIAs), who have never returned home, whose sacrifices and

1ordeals will never be known, and whose bravery will never be
2forgotten; and

3WHEREAS, Rolling Thunder Incorporated's major mission is to
4publicize the issues surrounding POW/MIAs and to educate the
5public concerning the many American prisoners of war who were
6left behind after past wars; and

7WHEREAS, Rolling Thunder Incorporated also seeks to help
8correct the past and protect future veterans from being left
9behind should they become POW/MIAs; and

10WHEREAS, While we look forward to the return of our troops
11currently serving overseas and hope for their safety, we must
12also remember and pay tribute to the more than 91,000 servicemen
13and women who are unaccounted for from the wars and armed
14conflicts the United States has been involved in since World War
15I; and

16WHEREAS, In recent years, commemorative chairs honoring
17American POW/MIAs have been placed in prominent locations across
18the United States, such as at sporting event stadiums, motor
19speedways and county and local government centers; and

20WHEREAS, Rolling Thunder Incorporated's dedicated efforts
21have resulted in over two hundred chairs being placed in less
22than 18 months; and

23WHEREAS, The Capitol Complex is an appropriate location to
24place a commemorative chair honoring American POW/MIAs; and

25WHEREAS, Veterans, their families and our communities and
26nation should strive to find a renewed commitment to the ideals
27for which veterans fought and the strength, unity and resolve to
28uphold their mission today and throughout the year; therefore be
29it

30RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives direct the Chief

1Clerk of the House, in consultation with the Capitol
2Preservation Committee, to prominently place a prisoners of
3war/missing in action chair of honor in the Main Capitol Rotunda
4area during the days surrounding National POW/MIA Recognition
5Day and Veteran's Day and in other appropriate House of
6Representatives locations as deemed appropriate by the Chief
7Clerk during the remainder of each year; and be it further

8RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage all
9public and private organizations and venues to join the House of
10Representatives, Rolling Thunder Incorporated and all others who
11have pledged that American POW/MIAs will never be forgotten by
12placing a POW/MIA Chair of Honor at various public venue
13facilities across this Commonwealth.
