A RESOLUTION
1Designating October 3, 2014, as "Manufacturing Day" in
2Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, The manufacturing industry directly adds over $70
4billion in value to Pennsylvania's economy every year; and
5WHEREAS, The manufacturing sector is a leading contributor to
6gross State product at 12%; and
7WHEREAS, Pennsylvania manufacturers sell $36 billion worth of
8goods overseas annually, representing 90% of all State exports;
9and
10WHEREAS, More than 570,000 Pennsylvania workers are employed
11directly on plant floors; and
12WHEREAS, Millions of additional Pennsylvania jobs are
1directly sustained by manufacturing in supply chains,
2distribution networks, warehousing and logistics; and
3WHEREAS, Manufacturing jobs have above-average wages and
4benefits, with average annual income of over $65,000, 44% higher
5than nonmanufacturing sectors; and
6WHEREAS, Manufacturing drives innovation and productivity,
7accounting for 70% of all research and development expenditures
8in Pennsylvania; and
9WHEREAS, More awareness is needed to attract students and
10young people to look at the manufacturing sector for
11opportunity, professional growth and family-sustaining jobs as
12over 8,000 positions remained unfilled on plant floors due to a
13lack of a trainable work force; therefore be it
14RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October
153, 2014, as "Manufacturing Day" in Pennsylvania, in conjunction
16with national efforts, to recognize the overwhelming economic
17contributions manufacturing makes in our Commonwealth and the
18ongoing potential it has in continuing to create the work force
19of tomorrow.
