A RESOLUTION
1Honoring the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity for 100 years of
2brotherhood, scholarship and service.
3WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard
4University in Washington, DC, on January 9, 1914, by three young
5African-American male students; and
6WHEREAS, The founders of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Honorable
7A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse and Honorable
8Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek-letter fraternity
9that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood,
10scholarship and service and that viewed itself as "a part of"
11the general community rather than "apart from" the general
12community; and
13WHEREAS, These founders desired for their fraternity to exist
14as part of an even greater brotherhood which would be devoted to
15the "inclusive we" rather than the "exclusive we" and would
1deliver services to the general community; and
2WHEREAS, Rather than gaining skills to be utilized
3exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, they
4held a deep conviction that they should return their newly
5acquired skills to the communities from which they had come and
6this deep conviction was mirrored in the fraternity's motto,
7"Culture for Service and Service for Humanity"; and
8WHEREAS, Today, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity has blossomed into
9an international organization of leaders with a membership of
10more than 150,000 college-educated men, operating in 675
11chapters around the globe; and
12WHEREAS, The brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity reaffirm
13and maintain a strong commitment to brotherhood, scholarship and
14service and ensure that the fraternity programs are focused and
15committed to serving humanity; and
16WHEREAS, Members of the fraternity have been instrumental in
17the establishment of the Phi Beta Sigma National Foundation, the
18Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union and the Sigma Beta Club
19Foundation; and
20WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, founded in 1920 with the
21assistance of Phi Beta Sigma, is the sister organization of the
22fraternity; therefore be it
23RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the Phi
24Beta Sigma Fraternity for 100 years of brotherhood, scholarship
25and service.
