A RESOLUTION

 

1Extending condolences and honoring the life contributions of
2Richard Mellon Scaife, political activist, philanthropist and
3owner and publisher of all of the Trib Total Media
4Publications, who lost his life to cancer on July 4, 2014.

5WHEREAS, Mr. Richard Mellon Scaife, political activist,
6philanthropist and the owner and publisher of all of the Trib
7Total Media Publications, passed away July 4, 2014; and

8WHEREAS, Mr. Scaife was born July 3, 1932, at Magee-Women's
9Hospital in Oakland, the second child of industrialist Alan
10Scaife and Sarah Mellon Scaife, and heir to the Mellon banking
11and industrial fortune; and

12WHEREAS, Mr. Scaife graduated from Deerfield Academy in
13Massachusetts, attended Yale University, his father's alma
14mater, and graduated in 1957 from the University of Pittsburgh
15with a degree in British history; and

16WHEREAS, After the deaths of his father in 1958 and his

1mother in 1965, Mr. Scaife immersed himself in the family's
2business interests and took on a greater philanthropic role; and

3WHEREAS, Mr. Scaife provided financial support to
4conservative groups that included the Heritage Foundation, the
5Cato Institute, the American Enterprise Institute and The Hoover
6Institution on War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University;
7and

8WHEREAS, In the 1990s, Mr. Scaife spurred the creation of the
9Allegheny Institute for Public Policy, which became a
10conservative voice on western Pennsylvania issues; and

11WHEREAS, Mr. Scaife supported many nonpolitical causes, among
12other contributions, and his foundations funded an early
13expansion of the Pittsburgh Aviary, developed the Sarah Scaife
14Gallery at the Carnegie and the Westmoreland Museum of American
15Art in Greensburg, redeveloped Station Square and the
16Pennsylvania Trolley Museum in Washington, Pennsylvania, and
17provided more than $1.4 million for the Boys & Girls Clubs of
18Western Pennsylvania; and

19WHEREAS, Mr. Scaife also supported a variety of educational
20institutions, such as the University of Chicago, Tufts
21University, Carnegie Mellon University, Boston University, the
22University of Pittsburgh, Pepperdine University, Bowling Green
23State University and his prep school alma mater, Deerfield
24Academy; and

25WHEREAS, Mr. Scaife made his mark in western Pennsylvania as
26a publisher, and in 1970 he purchased a small-market newspaper,
27then known as the Tribune-Review, based in Greensburg; and

28WHEREAS, In 1992, Mr. Scaife expanded the operations of the
29newspaper into Pittsburgh, renaming it the Pittsburgh Tribune-
30Review; and

1WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review became the centerpiece
2of Trib Total Media, now the City of Pittsburgh's largest source
3of news and information in western Pennsylvania; and

4WHEREAS, Mr. Scaife devoted his professional life to
5producing a quality, award-winning daily newspaper; and

6WHEREAS, Mr. Scaife's belief that newspapers are essential to
7America and to any free and prospering nation was demonstrated
8by his commitment to delivering international, national and
9regional news seven days a week; and

10WHEREAS, Mr. Scaife announced in May 2014 that he had been
11diagnosed with an untreatable form of cancer, and he passed away
12at his home July 4, 2014; and

13WHEREAS, Mr. Scaife is survived by two children, daughter
14Jennie King Scaife of Palm Beach, Florida, and son David Negley
15Scaife of Squirrel Hill, daughter-in-law Sara Scaife and two
16grandchildren, David and Sara; and

17WHEREAS, The arts, historic preservation, universities,
18political groups and community programs both large and small
19throughout western Pennsylvania and nationally have benefited
20from Mr. Scaife's generosity, and his impact on this
21Commonwealth and our nation will be remembered for generations;
22therefore be it

23RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend
24condolences and honor the life and contributions of Richard
25Mellon Scaife, political activist, philanthropist and owner and
26publisher of all of the Trib Total Media Publications, who lost
27his life to cancer on July 4, 2014.
