A RESOLUTION

 

1Recognizing the month of October 2014 as "Dyslexia Awareness
2Month" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, The children of this Commonwealth hold the key to
4the future of our State and our nation and deserve equal
5opportunities to succeed in educational endeavors; and

6WHEREAS, It is essential that children are nurtured, their
7passions and abilities are encouraged and their ideas are
8respected; and

9WHEREAS, In the learning process it has long been recognized
10that children have different educational abilities and learn at
11their own pace and in their own way; and

12WHEREAS, Children with specific learning disabilities such as
13dyslexia deserve the confidence and academic support needed for
14learning; and

1WHEREAS, Dyslexia is defined as a severe difficulty in
2understanding or using one or more areas of language, including
3listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling; and

4WHEREAS, A person with dyslexia may have a significant
5discrepancy between the person's intellectual ability and
6reading performance without an apparent physical, emotional or
7cultural cause; and

8WHEREAS, It is estimated that dyslexia is a learning
9disability which impairs 15% of American children; and

10WHEREAS, The House of Representatives supports the
11designation of "Dyslexia Awareness Month" as a means to foster
12greater understanding of this learning disability and the
13techniques which help children and adults overcome it; therefore
14be it

15RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize October
162014 as "Dyslexia Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it
17further

18RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend those
19organizations which provide services to children with dyslexia,
20thereby helping them reach their unlimited potential.
