A RESOLUTION
1Designating the month of September 2014 as "Ovarian Cancer
2Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, Every woman is at risk for ovarian cancer regardless
4of age, heritage or medical history; and
5WHEREAS, According to the American Cancer Society, a woman's
6risk of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer during her lifetime
7is 1 in 73; and
8WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the ninth most common cancer among
9women and the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women;
10and
11WHEREAS, Approximately one-half of the women with ovarian
1cancer are 63 years of age or older; and
2WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that there
3will be approximately 21,980 new cases of ovarian cancer in the
4United States in 2014 and that 14,270 women will die from
5ovarian cancer in 2014; and
6WHEREAS, Approximately one-fifth of ovarian cancers are found
7at an early stage; and
8WHEREAS, Early detection improves the chances of survival;
9and
10WHEREAS, Nine out of ten women treated for early ovarian
11cancer will live longer than five years after the cancer is
12found; and
13WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer awareness and education are important
14factors in diagnosis and treatment; therefore be it
15RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
16month of September 2014 as "Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month" in
17Pennsylvania.
