A RESOLUTION
1Honoring Felix "Tito" Trinidad for his achievements and
2contributions to the sport of boxing and congratulating him
3on his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
4WHEREAS, Felix "Tito" Trinidad was born January 10, 1973, in
5Fajardo, Puerto Rico; and
6WHEREAS, Tito, a retired professional boxer, is considered
7one of the best Puerto Rican boxers of all time; and
8WHEREAS, After winning five national amateur championships in
9Puerto Rico, Tito debuted as a professional boxer on March 10,
101990, when he was 17 years of age; and
11WHEREAS, On June 19, 1993, Tito won his first world
12championship after defeating Maurice Blocker for the
13International Boxing Federation's welterweight belt; and
14WHEREAS, During his career he continued to establish himself
15as an all-time great by scoring victories over Hector Camacho,
16Yory Boy Campas, Oba Carr, Rodney Moore, Freddie Pendleton,
17Pernell Whitaker and Oscar De La Hoya; and
1WHEREAS, On March 3, 2000, Tito moved up in weight to win the
2World Boxing Association's super welterweight title from David
3Reid; and
4WHEREAS, Later that year, Tito unified titles with a 12th
5round technical knockout over International Boxing Federation
6Champion Fernando Vargas; and
7WHEREAS, In 2001, Tito became a three-division champion with
8a fifth round technical knockout over William Joppy for the
9World Boxing Association's middleweight title; and
10WHEREAS, With 15 successful defenses, 12 by knockout, Tito
11holds the record for second-most welterweight title defenses;
12and
13WHEREAS, Tito holds the record for the longest reign as
14Welterweight Champion; six years, eight months and fourteen
15days; and
16WHEREAS, As one of boxing's brightest superstars in the 1990s
17and 2000s, Tito is still revered in Puerto Rico and around the
18world; and
19WHEREAS, In 2013, Tito became eligible and was voted into the
202014 Class of the International Boxing Hall of Fame; and
21WHEREAS, On Wednesday, June 4, 2014, Tito will be inducted
22into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, becoming the tenth
23Puerto Rican to receive such an honor; therefore be it
24RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor and
25congratulate Felix "Tito" Trinidad for his many accomplishments
26and congratulate him on his induction into the International
27Boxing Hall of Fame.
