A RESOLUTION

 

1Recognizing May 2014 as "Blue Star Mothers of America Month" in
2Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., was founded
4as a patriotic service organization on February 2, 1942, to
5unite mothers who had sons or daughters in the United States
6Armed Forces; and

7WHEREAS, The nonpartisan, nonsectarian, nondiscriminatory and
8nonprofit organization was chartered by the Congress of the
9United States in 1960; and

10WHEREAS, Persons eligible for membership in the organization
11include mothers and stepmothers who have sons or daughters who
12are currently serving in the United States military or who are

1honorably discharged veterans; and

2WHEREAS, Family members and friends may become associate
3members, and fathers of military personnel or veterans may join
4the Dad's Association; and

5WHEREAS, The work of Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.,
6includes providing support for active duty service personnel and
7their families, promoting patriotism and assisting various
8veterans organizations such as the American Gold Star Mothers,
9Inc.; and

10WHEREAS, The work of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.,
11is increasingly important with the countless hundreds of
12thousands of United States Armed Forces men and women who have
13served in Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom,
14the Global War on Terrorism and with the continued deployments
15of the Pennsylvania National Guard and our active duty military
16and its reserve components; and

17WHEREAS, The dedication, sacrifice and hard work of the
18devoted members of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., merit
19recognition; and

20WHEREAS, The Blue Star Service Flag is the official banner
21authorized by the Department of Defense for display by families
22who have members serving in the United States Armed Forces
23during a period of war or armed conflict the nation may be
24engaged in for the duration of such hostilities; and

25WHEREAS, The Blue Star Flag was designed and patented by
26World War I Army Captain Robert L. Queisser of the 5th Ohio
27Infantry who had two sons serving on the front lines and the
28flag quickly became an unofficial symbol of a child in service;
29therefore be it

30RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize May

12014 as "Blue Star Mothers of America Month" in Pennsylvania;
2and be it further

3RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage all
4citizens of this Commonwealth to take some time during the month
5of May 2014 to honor and recognize their dedication and
6sacrifice; and be it further

7RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and
8celebrate the history and contributions of Blue Star Mothers of
9America, Inc.; and be it further

10RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
11Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.
