INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MAY 1, 2014
A RESOLUTION
1Designating August 2014 as "Native American Awareness Month" in
2Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, The Lenape (Delaware) are an indigenous people in
4this Commonwealth and were displaced from the eastern states to
5Indiana in the early 1800s; and
6WHEREAS, The Thunder Mountain Lenape is an organization of
7persons who share the Native American heritage of the Lenape;
8and
9WHEREAS, The Thunder Mountain Lenape has been active in their
10community interpreting their traditions, heritage and culture
11regionally, Statewide and internationally, including exhibits of
12art at the United Nations; and
13WHEREAS, The Thunder Mountain Lenape holds a Native American
14Festival in August; and
1WHEREAS, The United Nations celebrates August 9 of each year
2as "Indigenous Peoples' Day"; and
3WHEREAS, The House of Representatives supports the United
4Nations' effort to increase public awareness of indigenous
5peoples' cultural heritage and place in today's society;
6therefore be it
7RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate August
82014 as "Native American Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
