A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating June 2014 as "Cancer Survivors Recognition Month" in
2Pennsylvania and honoring all cancer survivors for their 
3strength and courage in the face of this devastating illness.

4WHEREAS, The National Cancer Institute reports that
5approximately 1.6 million new cases of cancer are expected to be
6diagnosed in the United States in 2014; and

7WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that 79,920
8new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Pennsylvania in 2014;
9and

10WHEREAS, As a result of advances in early detection and
11treatment, cancer has become a curable disease for some and a
12chronic illness for many others; and

13WHEREAS, A cancer survivor is anyone living with a history of

1cancer from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of
2life; and

3WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society and the National Cancer
4Institute estimate that 13.7 million Americans with a history of
5cancer were alive in January 2012; and

6WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network
7reports that there are 608,000 cancer survivors in Pennsylvania;
8and

9WHEREAS, Cancer survivors come in many forms: parent, child,
10grandparent, family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor; and

11WHEREAS, Cancer survivorship has three distinct phases:
12living with cancer, living through cancer and living beyond
13cancer; and

14WHEREAS, Survivorship can be both stressful and hopeful.
15Surviving cancer can leave a host of problems in its wake.
16Physical, emotional and financial hardships often persist for
17years after diagnosis and treatment; and

18WHEREAS, Many cancer survivors are deeply grateful to their
19caregivers, family, friends, health care providers and
20communities for their love, dedication and support as they
21battle cancer; and

22WHEREAS, Despite the fear, the challenges and the setbacks,
23life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful, productive and
24even inspiring and triumphant; therefore be it

25RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June
262014 as "Cancer Survivors Recognition Month" in Pennsylvania in
27celebration of life; and be it further

28RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor all cancer
29survivors and urge all citizens to pause to honor those who are
30living with a history of cancer for their strength, courage and

1inspiration.
