A RESOLUTION

 

1Recognizing State, county and local road crews, emergency
2responders, public utility workers, the Pennsylvania National
3Guard and employees of certain Commonwealth departments for
4their contributions to the safety of Pennsylvanians during
5the winter of 2013-2014.

6WHEREAS, The winter of late 2013 and early 2014 was one of
7the coldest winters on record and brought several feet of
8precipitation to regions in this Commonwealth over the span of
9the season; and

10WHEREAS, The snow and ice storms that occurred throughout the
11winter spurred hundreds of vehicle accidents, hundreds of
12thousands of customers without power and countless fallen trees
13and limbs across this Commonwealth; and

14WHEREAS, Despite many areas in this Commonwealth facing salt
15shortages, State, county and municipal road crews worked around
16the clock to clear snow and ice from the roads for motorists to

1travel safely; and

2WHEREAS, Police, fire departments and emergency medical
3services teams bravely risked their own safety to rescue
4endangered drivers and passengers stranded by hazardous road
5conditions; and

6WHEREAS, Public utility employees worked tirelessly for many
7days in bitterly cold weather to repair power lines in an effort
8to restore electricity to Pennsylvania homeowners suffering
9without heat or power; and

10WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania National Guard, the Pennsylvania
11State Police, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Association
12and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation served as
13invaluable resources during the winter season, providing safety
14information to Commonwealth citizens and being prepared to
15respond to those in need; therefore be it

16RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and
17commend State, county and local road crews, emergency
18responders, public utility workers, the Pennsylvania National
19Guard, the Pennsylvania State Police, the Pennsylvania Emergency
20Management Association and the Pennsylvania Department of
21Transportation for their contributions in responding to the
22crisis caused by the inclement winter of 2013-2014.
